Lighting the Way: Why We Chose The Hermit
Share
When we set out to make something truly different, we looked inward before stepping outward. The Hermit came into the world not just as a name or a product line, but as a symbol of the kind of adventure we believe in. Inspired by the classic Rider-Waite tarot card, our Hermit isn’t a lonely mystic, he’s a guide. A quiet wanderer who trades comfort for clarity, and seeks meaning over ease. In our version, the man is gone. In his place: a squid. Absurd? Yeah. But then again, the best paths are the ones less traveled.
Just like our mascot, squid is a strange, brilliant choice — overlooked, nutrient-rich, and uniquely sustainable. It's one of the healthiest proteins on the planet, naturally low in fat, rich in omega-3s and collagen, and shockingly low in mercury and toxins. Our squid is a small fish, wild-caught using low-impact gear from well-managed fisheries, making it a rare example of seafood that’s truly sustainable at scale. In a world that’s just waking up to the costs of industrial meat, we think the Hermit would approve.
We designed this product for people in motion -- physically, mentally, even spiritually. Modern adventurers, wanderers, nomads, and people seeking something more from the snacks they stash in their packs. Whether you’re bagging peaks and FKTs, playing hooky on the mountain, floating or just absorbing some sunlit wonder, we wanted to create a snack that fuels your journey without compromise. Squid jerky might seem like a curveball, but once you taste it, you’ll understand. It’s umami-rich, satisfying, and clean. It is not a gimmick, it is a food that embodies the wisdom of the ages.
We set out to make something we could stand behind -- nutritionally, ecologically, and philosophically. We don’t believe that you should have to sacrifice your values just to get some tasty and shelf-stable protein in your bag.
In the end, we see The Hermit not just as a product, but as a quiet companion for the path ahead. A reminder that it’s okay to stray from the trail, to question what’s standard, and to pursue something a little stranger, and a lot better. And if that makes us weird, well, we think there’s strength in solitude. Light your lantern. Step off the path. Join us.
